Kanji Mavu: The Sattva Kitchen Porridge Mix That Grew Up with a Generation
A roasted multi-grain family favourite, made in-house and served one warm bowl at a time

For many Dhanyam families, kanji mavu is more than a breakfast mix. It has been part of the morning rhythm for years—so much so that children who began their day with a warm bowl of it are now college-goers. That continuity is one reason this remains a flagship product from Dhanyam’s Sattva Kitchen.
Dhanyam Organic Kanji Mavu brings together millets, rice, pulses, nuts and cardamom in one versatile porridge mix. The ingredients are carefully roasted and powdered in-house at Sattva Kitchen, creating a warm, nutty blend that cooks into a smooth and comforting kanji.
What goes into Dhanyam Kanji Mavu?
The blend contains ragi (finger millet), kambu (pearl millet), jowar (sorghum), thinai (foxtail millet), samai (little millet), varagu (kodo millet), red rice, roasted green gram, groundnut, wheat, cashew and cardamom.
Each ingredient plays a different part. The grains and millets form the body of the porridge; green gram, groundnut and cashew give it depth and a gently rich taste; and cardamom rounds everything off with a familiar aroma. It is a practical way to bring several traditional staples into one everyday bowl.
Made in-house at Sattva Kitchen
This is not a mix assembled from anonymous ready-made powders. At Sattva Kitchen, the ingredients are handled as a recipe: selected, roasted with care and then powdered into a balanced blend. Roasting develops the aroma of the grains and nuts and gives the finished kanji its characteristic homely flavour.
That in-house preparation is central to the product. It allows Dhanyam to keep the recipe rooted in the kind of multi-grain kanji families have made for generations, while making it easy enough for busy school, college and workday mornings.
How to make Kanji Mavu porridge
Makes: 2 small bowls
Active time: about 2 minutes
Total time: about 10–12 minutes
Ingredients
- 3 tablespoons Dhanyam Organic Kanji Mavu
- 1½ cups water, plus a little more if needed
- Dhanyam Organic Jaggery Powder, to taste (optional)
- Boiled Dhanyam Organic Desi Cow Milk, as needed (optional)
Method
- Place the kanji mavu and Dhanyam’s organic jaggery in a small bowl. Add about ½ cup of room-temperature water and whisk until you have a smooth, lump-free slurry.
- Bring the remaining 1 cup water to a gentle boil in a thick-bottomed pan.
- Lower the heat and slowly pour in the slurry, stirring continuously.
- Cook on a low flame for 7–10 minutes, stirring often, until the raw-flour smell disappears and the porridge looks smooth and glossy. Add a splash of hot water if it becomes thicker than you like.
- Switch off the heat.
- For a milkier bowl, let the kanji cool slightly and stir in warm, previously boiled Dhanyam Organic Desi Cow Milk to the consistency you prefer.
The exact thickness is personal. Make it pourable for a light breakfast, or keep it spoonable for a more substantial bowl. Adults may also enjoy it without sweetener, with just a pinch of salt.
Why this simple bowl has stayed with families
Good everyday food earns its place through repetition. Kanji is easy to eat, gentle in texture and adaptable to different ages and appetites. A child may prefer a thinner, mildly sweet bowl; a college student may want a thicker breakfast before leaving home; an adult may keep it unsweetened.
Its real strength is variety rather than a single “superfood” claim. The recipe combines cereals and millets with a pulse and nuts. India’s ICMR–National Institute of Nutrition dietary guidelines encourage varied food groups—including cereals and millets, pulses, nuts and milk or curd—as part of a balanced diet. Kanji mavu can be one useful part of that wider meal pattern; it is not a replacement for fruits, vegetables and the rest of a varied diet.
Choosing jaggery and milk
Dhanyam Organic Jaggery Powder gives the porridge a rounded, caramel-like sweetness that pairs naturally with roasted grains and cardamom. Add it lightly and adjust after tasting—jaggery is still an added sugar, even though it is less refined than white sugar.
Dhanyam Organic Desi Cow Milk is optional. Water alone makes a satisfying kanji; milk makes it creamier. Always boil fresh milk appropriately before use, then add it after the cooked porridge has cooled slightly.
Storage and useful notes
- Keep the dry mix tightly closed in a cool, dry place and always use a clean, dry spoon.
- Because the blend contains groundnuts and cashews, take particular care if anyone in the family has a nut or peanut allergy.
- The mix contains wheat and is therefore not gluten-free.
- Cook only what you need when possible. Refrigerate leftovers promptly and reheat thoroughly, loosening with water or milk.
- For babies and very young children, discuss timing, texture and allergens with a paediatrician; avoid added sugar for children under two.
Bring home the Sattva Kitchen favourite
From its many grains to the careful roasting and powdering, Dhanyam Kanji Mavu carries the thoughtfulness of an in-house kitchen recipe. It is traditional without being fussy, nourishing without exaggerated promises, and familiar enough to become part of a family’s story—one warm bowl at a time.
