Tasty Crispy Lip Smacking Thattai Recipe

Thattai is a crispy snack made for festivals like Deepavali and Krishna Jayanthi. It is a nice tea time snack and here is how to make it!


  1. Rice flour – 4 cups
  2. Urad dhal flour – 1/4 cup
  3. Roasted gram flour (pottukadalai) – 3/4 cup
  4. Grated coconut – 2 tbsp (optional)
  5. Channa dal – 2 tblsp
  6. Red chilli powder -2 tsp
  7. Butter – 2 tbsp
  8. White sesame seeds – 1 tbsp
  9. Asafoetida – 1/4 tsp
  10. Butter – 2 tbsp
  11. Salt to taste
  12. Oil
  13. Curry leaves – a few.

How to Prepare:

  • Dry roast the urad dal and powder it in a mixer.
  • Grind the roasted gram into a fine powder.
  • Soak the channa dal for half an hour.
  • Mix the rice flour, urad dal flour and the roasted gram flour together.
  • Drain and add the channa dal to the flour.
  • Add the curry leaves, salt, asafeotida, butter, red chilli powder, sesame seeds and grated coconut.
  • Knead it into a firm dough adding just enough water.
  • Spread a clean white muslin cloth.
  • Take a lemon sized dough and flatten it with your fingers (grease your finger with little oil or dip your fingers in a bowl of water).
  • Heat oil in a kadai.
  • When the oil is hot, reduce it to medium flame.
  • Drop the thattai and fry on both sides.
  • Crispy thattai is ready for an evening snack!
